UCLA To Host Hawai'i

Jamabo S UNLVUCLA (1-0) is coming off a short week of practice hot on the heels of their greatest comeback in school history. The architect of that comeback, junior quarterback Josh Rosen, was named Pac 12 Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 491 yards and four touchdowns.

Three Bruins hit the century mark or more in receiving yards. Tight end Caleb Wilson caught 15 passes for a new school single game reception record. He also had 208 yards. Darren Andrews had 12 receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns and Jordan Lasley had four catches for 100 yards and one touchdown.

While it would be easy for UCLA to bask in the afterglow of such a substantial and thrilling victory but this is a team that needs to improve running the football and stopping the run. If they can’t do either it could end up being a long season.

Enter UCLA’s next opponent unbeaten, Hawai’i (2-0). The Rainbow Warriors aren’t the team that you could count on a win. The Bows are improved and are on a five game winning streak going back to last season, including a bowl victory.

The Bows are coached Nick Rolovich, who played his college football for Hawai’i. He is in his second-year as head coach and the improvement has been dramatic. He played under June Jones, during one of the best runs in Hawai’i football history. When his playing days were over for the Bows, Rolovich, held 19 school passing and eight total offense records. He is on a mission to return Hawai’i football to relevance and win over UCLA would be a huge step in that direction.

Junior quarterback, Dru Brown (6-0, 200), is the triggerman behind the Warrior offense. In two games, Brown had thrown for 545 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Hawaii’s leading receivers are sophomore John Ursua (5-10, 165) and BYU transfer junior Dylan Collie (5-10, 175). Ursua has 12 receptions for 272 yards and one touchdown. Collie has nine receptions for 117 yards and one touchdown.

Senior running back, Diocemy Saint Juste, (5-8, 200) leads the Bows in rushing with 280 yards and one touchdown. Senior, Ryan Tuisoa, has 98 yards and a team leading three touchdowns.

The two teams have met twice before in the 1930s with the Bruins winning both times.

The game will is scheduled to kickoff at 2:01 PM PST and will be televised on the Pac 12 Network with JB Long doing the play-by-play, Yogi Roth sitting in the analyst’s chair and Jill Savage on the sideline.

If you are out and about you can listing to the game on 1150 AM with Josh Lewin back for play-by-back and Bruins Quarterbacks Matt Stevens (analyst) and Wayne Cook (sideline) in their usual roles.
