UCLA To Play in 2019 Jim Maui Invitational

UCLA MEN’S BASKETBALL TO PLAY IN 2019 MAUI JIM MAUI INVITATIONAL

Bruins to return to Maui in November of 2019

 

Wilkes K UWMAUI, Hawaii –UCLA will join a field of eight talented basketball programs in the Championship Round of the 2019 Maui Jim Maui Invitational, it was announced Tuesday.

 

The Bruins will return to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in November 2019, joining a field that includes BYU, Dayton, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan State, Virginia Tech and Chaminade. The Championship Round will take place Nov. 25-27, 2019 at the Lahaina Civic Center on the island of Maui.

 

UCLA last participated in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov. 2015. Prior to that appearance, UCLA played in the event in Nov. 2011 and won the tournament title in Nov. 2006. UCLA’s two other trips to play in the tournament in Maui took place on Nov. 1995 and Nov. 2001.

 

Since the inception of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in 1984, 124 schools representing 26 conferences and 40 states have competed in the event. Teams that have participated in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational throughout the event’s history own 68 of the 79 NCAA Division I Basketball Championships. Six schools have gone on to win the NCAA title after competing in Maui earlier in the season.

About the 2019 Championship Round Teams

Chaminade

Most recently, head coach Eric Bovaird completed his seventh year of coaching the Silverswords. In 2017-18, Bovaird became the second-winningest coach in program history, boasting 105 wins with the Silverswords. Chaminade has appeared in five NCAA Division II Tournaments, all-time, and has registered eight victories at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational (defeating programs such as Texas, Oklahoma, Stanford, and Villanova).

 

BYU

Dave Rose just completed his 13th season as the Cougars’ head coach and has compiled a .729 winning percentage. BYU will make its fourth trip to play in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in 2019, having previously competed in the event in 1992, 2004 and 2014. Under Coach Rose, BYU has never had a season with fewer than 20 wins. BYU has totaled 30 conference championship titles.

 

Dayton

The Dayton Flyers have advanced to four of the last five NCAA Tournaments (2014-17), making 18 total appearances. Next season will mark Anthony Grant’s second year as the program’s head coach. Dayton will be seeking its second Maui Invitational tournament title, having first won the championship field in 2003. The Flyers will be making their fourth appearance at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational (also in 2000, 2003 and 2013).

 

Georgia

Earlier this month, Tom Crean was named the Georgia Bulldogs’ new head coach. Georgia has advanced to the NCAA Tournament 10 times, including back-to-back appearances in 2016 and 2017. The Bulldogs have won three conference regular-season crowns and three conference tournament titles. The Nov. 2019 trip to Maui will mark Georgia’s first-ever appearance in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

 

Kansas

The Jayhawks currently hold the nation’s record for most current and consecutive winning seasons (34). Bill Self is currently in his 15th season as Kansas’ head coach, boasting an overall winning percentage of 82.3%. The Jayhawks hold the active streak for most consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (29). This will be Kansas’ seventh appearance in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, having previously won tournament titles in 1996 and 2015.

 

Michigan State

Under the direction of the longest tenured coach in the Big Ten Conference, Michigan State just concluded its 23rd season with Tom Izzo at the helm. The Spartans have advanced to the NCAA Tournament the past 21 years. Michigan State has enjoyed a winning season every year since 1996. The Spartans have one Maui Jim Maui Invitational title under their belt (1991), and 2019 will mark their fourth appearance in the tournament field.

 

UCLA

Under the direction of head coach Steve Alford, the Bruins have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in four of his five seasons in Westwood. UCLA holds the record for most NCAA Championships (11) and most consecutive NCAA titles (seven). The Bruins will make their sixth trip to play in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, having most recently played in the tournament in Nov. 2015. UCLA won the tournament title in 2006 before returning to play in the Maui Invitational in 2011.

 

Virginia Tech

Buzz Williams completed his fourth season as the Hokies’ head coach in 2017-18. He has coached his college teams to eight 20-win seasons in 11 years as a head coach. The Hokies have advanced to the NCAA Tournament 10 times, including consecutive berths in 2017 and 2018. Virginia Tech will make its second trip to play in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational in 2019, having previously played in the tournament in 1985.
