Bruins Swept In the Mountains

Written by

Wilkes K CU022518UCLA (19-10, 10-7) just didn’t play well enough on this road trip losing 80-76 to Colorado (16-13, 8-9) and were swept by the two mountain schools.

It wasn’t that the Bruins played horribly, but they did the kind of things that have hurt them all season long when they lose.

UCLA battled back to make a game of it 52-52 after trailing by 10 with half a game to go. Then four next four minutes-plus, the Bruins fell apart and let the Buffs go on a 17-1 run. This was too much for the Bruins overcome.

The Bruins once again battled back to make CU fans a bit nervous but never were able to close to a four-point deficit.

The stat line was pretty even between the two teams. Except for one glaring difference. UCLA shot 41.5 from the floor while CU shot 41.4. From the three the Bruins shot 45.2 and the Buffs shot 46.7. From the foul line UCLA shot 66.7 and Colorado shot 72 percent, but here is the glaring difference. The Buffs made 18 out of 25 free throws while the Bruins were eight out of 12. The Buffs had more than double the attempts and in a four-point game that made all the difference.

The Buffs were also able to take advantage of Bruin turnovers scoring 18 points off 11 UCLA turnovers. In contrast, the Bruins scored only eight points off 10 CU turnovers.

Five Buffs scored in double-figures led by Damion Collier’s team-high 19 points. George King scored 16, Lucas Siewert had 15 points, Namon Wright added 11, and McKinley Wright scored 10.

The Bruins had three players score in double-figures, including Aaron Holiday’s game-high 21 points. Kris Wilkes chipped in 20 and Prince Ali scored 11 off the bench.

Now the Bruins will head cross town to Galen Center to play red-hot USC (21-9, 12-5) and close out the regular-season. The Trojans just swept the two mountain schools and are looking really good to make the postseason NCAA Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 PM PST and will be televised on ESPN.
