Bruins Head To Tempe In Search Of Sweep

Written by

Wilkes K OU012118When UCLA (17-7, 8-4) and Arizona State (18-6, 6-6) meet, both teams will be coming off huge emotional wins. The Bruins upset No. 13 Arizona, 82-74, while the Sun Devils trailing 78-71 with less than three minutes to play roared back and defeated USC, 80-78 when senior guard Tra Holder (6-1, 180) hit a floater with two seconds left on the clock to clinch the win.

The Sun Devils were also aided in their victory with some strong defense shutting down the Trojans and some timely three-point shooting down the stretch with freshman guard Remy Martin (6-0, 170), senior guard Kodi Justice (6-5, 190) and senior guard Shannon Evans (6-1, 172) all hitting threes in the final minutes of the game.

UCLA played the type of basketball they do, when they win, against the Wildcats. They played solid defense and shared the basketball. The Bruins played with great energy and fire. Five players scored in double-figures and as a team, they shot 51.6 percent from the field.

Aaron Holiday led the Bruins in scoring with 17 points and eight assists. GG Golomon had a career-high 16 points, including three, three-pointers, one was a soul crusher late in the game to essentially put the game on ice. Kris Wilkes was solid scoring 14 points.

Thomas Welsh accounted for another double-double scoring 11 points and came down with 12 boards. Jaylen Hands scored 11 points, including three straight three-pointers at the end of the first-half that changed a back tight, back and forth affair into a 10 point UCLA lead at the half.

The Bruins are riding the crest of a four-game winning streak and will need the same kind of energy and focus that they had against the Wildcats. Road wins are extremely hard in the Pac-12 Conference and the Bruins are on the cusp sweeping the desert schools. No small task indeed.

Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM PST and will be televised by the Pac-12 Network with Guy Haberman handling the play-by-play, all-time Bruin great Don MacLean analyzing the game, and Jill Savage will be reporting from the sideline.

UCLA Sports Network from IMG will broadcast the game locally on AM 1150 with Josh Lewin doing the play-by-play and another UCLA great Tracy Murray sitting in the analyst chair.
