Bruins To Host Utes

Written by

Holiday A UKyUCLA (12-4, 3-1) is back at Pauley Pavilion to host Utah (10-5, 2-2) the tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM PST. While the Bruins split their road trip to the Bay Area, the Utes were swept at home against Arizona and Arizona State.

The Bruins lost in frustrating fashion against Stanford, last week. If UCLA would have hit just one free-throw, they missed their last five straight during regulation, the Bruins would have left the Bay Area with a sweep.

The way the Bruins lost against the Cardinal could have demoralized them, but they came out on fire. After the Bears scored the first deuce, UCLA went on a 13-0 run and ended up blowing out the Bears, 107-84

The Bruins answered the bell in Berkeley the way you would hope they would after the disheartening double-overtime loss to Stanford on Thursday.

When UCLA is playing winning basketball, they will play good defense and their share the ball. Against Cal, the Bruins hit 58.2 percent from the floor, an outstanding 56.7 from beyond the three-point arc and vast improvement at the foul line, hitting 78.8 percent of their free-throws.

UCLA had six players in double figures and probably would have had seven if GG Golomon wasn’t in foul trouble. Golomon scored nine points before fouling out. He also had a game-high three blocked shots.

Aaron Holiday came up big again leading the Bruins in scoring and was second in assists, scoring 21 points and contributing five assists.

Thomas Welsh notched his tenth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Kris Wilkes scored 16 points, Prince Ali scored 15, and Alex Olesinski had a career-high 14 points.

Jaylen Hands was outstanding off the bench playing a well-round game scoring 11 points, a game-high eight assists, against only one turnover and had a game-high three steals.

Utah lost two tough games at home after beating the two Oregon schools on the road to open Pac-12 play. Winning on the road is tough in conference play, but the Utes so far this season have been an outlier, losing both home games and winning both road games. The Bruins hope they give the Utes their first conference road loss of the season.

The Utes have five players who are averaging scoring in double-figures, so they do a good job sharing the ball.

Senior forward, David Collette (6-10, 220) leads the Utes in scoring averaging 13.6 points per game (ppg), but their offense goes through senior point guard, Justin Bibbins (5-8, 150), who is averaging 13.1 ppg and leads the team in assists, averaging 4.7 assists per game.

Junior guard Sedrick Barefield (6-2, 190) chips in 11.5 ppg and has been shooting the ball well of late. Senior forward, Tyler Rawson (6-10, 225) averages 11.4 ppg and leads the team in rebounds, grabbing 6.3 boards a game. The Utes are glad to get freshman forward, Donnie Tillman (6-7, 225), who returned two games ago against Arizona. Tillman adds 10.2 ppg and 6.2 rebounds per game.

The game will be televised on ESPN2 Dave Pasch doing play-by-play and Bruin great Bill Walton analyzing the action.

UCLA Sports Network from IMG will broadcast the game on your radio dial AM 1150 Josh Lewin and another Bruin great Tracy Murray performing their usual roles.
