Bruins Hope To Bounce Back Against Bears

Written by

Holiday A Cal 022516How UCLA (11-4, 2-1) responds to their double-overtime loss to Stanford will speak volumes of where they are as a basketball team. Awaiting the Bruins will be Cal (7-8, 1-1), who are coming off a thumping loss to USC, 80-62, so the stage is set for two teams that are coming off losses, the question is what team is going to put the loss behind them and come ready to play.

The Bruins must bounce back at the foul line and have to defend the backdoor at a higher level. How Thomas Welsh responds will be key as well. The Bruin senior big man only logged 23 minutes in the double overtime loss to Stanford.

Aaron Holiday led the Bruins in scoring with 31 points, 29 of which came in the second-half when the rest of the Bruins were struggling.

The Bruins also need to stay out of foul trouble. Three Bruins saw early exits due to fouling out.

Cal is coming into this game after getting blistered on their home floor against USC and they could either come out flat or fired up and play out of their heads. We will see what shows up for Cal.

The Bears are coached by Wyking Jones, who is in his first year on the job. He is originally from Inglewood, Calif., and has had assistant coaching stints at New Mexico, Louisville and Cal before getting the job when Cuonzo Martin vacated from the Cal job to coach Missouri which is closer to his hometown of East St. Louis.

Cal has four players who are averaging in double-figures, led by junior guard, Don Coleman (6-3, 193) who averages 19.1 points per game (ppg). Freshman guard, Darius McNeill (6-3, 175) is next averaging 12.9 ppg, senior forward Marcus Lee (6-11, 225) chips in 12.5 ppg and leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.9 boards a game. Freshman forward, Justice Sueing (6-7, 209) averages 12.2 ppg and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM PST and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein handling the play-by-play and Bruin great Don MacLean analyzing the action.

UCLA Sports Network from IMG will broadcast the game on your radio dial at AM 1150 with Josh Lewin and another UCLA great Tracy Murray performing their usual roles.
