Bruins Get Handled By Stanford

Anderson K DukeThe Bruins came into Stanford with an impressive four game winning streak as they buried Cal during the week 86-66 and were looking to make it a clean sweep of the Bay area teams. Stanford (17-8, 8-6 Pac 12) would have none of it as they handled the Bruins (21-6, 10-4 Pac 12) with ease with an extremely impressive win 83-74.

UCLA Travels To Cal In Hope Of Sweep

Adams J 350 USCHead coach Steve Alford’s Bruins head up north this week to face off with the two bay area teams as they attempt to complete make it a clean sweep of Cal Thursday night in Hass Pavilion. The Bruins will play four of their last six games on the road which will be very challenging for the young Bruins. {mprestrtiction ids="3,4,5,6"}

The Bruins are all alone in second place in the conference with a 20-5 overall record and 9-3 in Pac 12 play. Cal comes into the game tied for third place with Arizona State owning a 17-8 overall record and 8-4 in league play.

UCLA’s task will not be an easy one. Even though the Bruins have had success in the past on Cal’s home court, they haven’t won there since January 6, 2010, when they beat the Bears in overtime 76-75.

Teams always want to peak at the right time as they approach tournament play and that winning momentum is crucial for a team’s confidence at the most important time of the year.

UCLA is on a roll with that confidence and momentum. Going into the Cal game, the Bruins are arguably playing their best basketball of the season. The Bruins have won six of their last seven games and are only one game behind conference leader the Arizona Wildcats.

Alford has brought his up temp, fast breaking, running offense that has been exciting and a joy to watch. It’s the kind of offense that has gotten everyone involved in the process. There have been numerous games this year where the Bruins have had five players score in double figures.

One of the key’s of Alford’s new Bruin offense is how everyone involved, including a major contribution from the UCLA bench, where they have been responsible for 28.5 percent of the offensive production this year.

Alford’s offense has been emphatically embraced by the Bruin fan base after to many years of Ben Howland’s slow methodical set type of offense.

The Bruins high flying offense is 10th in the nation in scoring, averaging 83.1 points per game and is second in the Pac-12. This explosive offense is led by Jordan Adams, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game and also leads the Pac-12 in steals, averaging 2.9 steals per game.

Cal will a formidable foe and are led by senior guard Justin Cobbs who is a local product from Los Angeles. He has been outstanding all year and is averaging 16.0 points per game and is one of Cal’s better defenders.

As the Bruins head into the home stretch it’s critical they continue to play with the intensity, energy and execute their defense and crash the boards.

If the Bruins can be consistent with these efforts, they should be able to complete the sweep of the Bears and move onto the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday afternoon.{/mprestriction}
