Savage J 350LOS ANGELES – The UCLA offense exploded to lift the Bruins to a 13-2 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins tied their second-highest run total of the season in the victory.

The Bruin bats combined to record 16 hits on the night, led by Luke Persico (4-for-5, HR, 2 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI) who had a huge stat line which included three extra-base hits. Brett Urabe (3-for-6, 3B, R, 2 RBI) also had a big night, totaling three hits and a triple.

Grant Dyer (4-3) was excellent, earning a complete game win, allowing just two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts over his nine innings. Eli Lingos (3-4) got the loss for the Sun Devils, allowing five runs on four hits without recording an out.

UCLA (25-27, 12-14) erupted in the first inning to take a big lead over Arizona State early in the ballgame. The Bruins belted two home runs and scored seven runs on seven hits in the frame. The first six batters reached base and 11 men came to the plate in total. Persico got the scoring started with a three-run homer to left before Zander Clarke got in the act with his first career homer, a two-run shot, to put UCLA up by five just five batters into the inning. Then, Brett Stephens drove in a run with his 12th double of the year and Urabe recorded his second hit of the inning with a triple to right to lift the Bruins to a seven-run advantage.

The Bruins then tacked on a run in the third on some head’s up base running from Christoph Bono. On second base with two outs, Bono hustled around to score on an infield single by Urabe to give UCLA the 8-0 edge.

UCLA then continued to pour it on with a pair of runs in each of the next two innings to push their lead to 12 runs through just five innings of play.

Arizona State (32-19, 14-12) was getting shutout until the seventh inning when Ryan Lillard cranked a two-run home run to right field to break Dyer’s shutout and put the Sun Devils on the board.

However, that would be the last run surrendered by Dyer and the Bruins who went on to add another run in the eighth to capture the 13-2 win.
