Kyle Molnar Leads UCLA to Series Clinching Win over UC Irvine

Written by  UCLA Press Release

Molinar K350LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Bruins defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium to seal the series victory for the Bruins.

Kyle Molnar (5-4) turned in a spectacular effort to earn the win, carrying a no hitter into the seventh inning. The right-hander went a career-high 7.2 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs with nine strikeouts. Alonzo Garcia (4-4) received the loss for the Anteaters, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings.

The Bruin offense totaled eight hits, led by Kort Peterson (2-for-3, 2B, 2 R, RBI, HBP) and Sean Bouchard (1-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI).

UCLA (23-22) got the scoring started early, plating a run in the first inning to take the lead over UC Irvine. The Bruins took advantage of an Anteater error which kept the inning alive with two outs. After Eric Filia reached on the error, Luke Persico singled and Peterson doubled to right to score the opening run for UCLA.

The Bruins drove in another two-out run in the fourth to push their lead to two. With runners on the corners, Daniel Rosica singled up the middle to plate the runner from third and give UCLA a, 2-0, edge.

Bouchard then delivered a big blow with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth to double the Bruin lead to four. UCLA added another run in the inning when Christoph Bono stole second and came all the way around to score on an errant throw which caromed off of him and into the outfield.

UC Irvine (26-19), who had been completely stymied by Molnar, finally broke the shutout in the ninth with an RBI-single from Mitchell Holland, but that would be the only run as UCLA captured a, 5-1, win.

The Bruins continue their home stand on Tuesday, May 10 when they host the Pepperdine Waves at 6:00pm PT. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting or by calling 310-UCLA-WIN. Fans can also listen to the game live on
