No. 14 UCLA Drops Series Finale to Arizona

Written by  Official UCLA Press Release

Bruce TJ 350TUCSON, Ariz. – The 14th-ranked UCLA Bruins fell to the Arizona Wildcats, 6-5, on Saturday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field. The Bruins allowed five runs in the ninth to lose the series, 2-1.

The Bruin offense racked up eight hits in the loss, led by Luke Persico (2-for-5, 3 RBI) who drove in a trio of runs. Sean Bouchard (2-for-3, 2B, R, BB) and Eric Filia (2-for-4, RBI, BB) also pitched in multi-hit performances to aid the effort.

Scott Burke (1-2) ended up with the loss after allowing one run on two hits in 0.1 innings. Kevin Ginkel (1-0) got the win for Arizona, pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

The game began as a pitcher’s duel, with neither team garnering much offense through the opening four scoreless frames.

UCLA (12-9, 4-2) finally broke through in the fifth to take the first lead of the game. With two runners on base, Persico and Filia delivered back-to-back two out singles to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead on the Wildcats.

The Bruins then loaded the bases with no outs in the next inning. Brett Stephens walked to force in a run and then Persico singled through the right side to bring in another two runs and lift UCLA to the five-run advantage.

Arizona (16-7, 3-3) finally got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Bruin lead to four. With a man on third, Cesar Salazar grounded out to second base to bring the man in from third, making the score, 5-1.

That was the only run Molnar surrendered, an unearned run, in his seven strong innings of work. The freshman struck out eight and allowed just five hits.

However, his afternoon was ruined by the Wildcats in the ninth. Arizona rallied from four runs back to score five runs on four hits in the final frame, capped by a Bobby Dalbec walk-off double.

The Bruins now return home to take on the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Tuesday, March 29 at 6:00pm PT. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting or by calling 310-UCLA-WIN. Fans can watch the game live on the Pac-12 Network or listen live at
