UCLA Alums Gerrit Cole and Brandon Crawford Named MLB All-Stars

Jackie Robinson StadiumLOS ANGELES – Former UCLA Baseball players Gerrit Cole and Brandon Crawford have each been selected to play in the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, it was announced today.

 

Cole, a right-handed pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Crawford, a shortstop for the San Francisco Giants, will both represent the National League at the Midsummer Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, July 14. Both Cole and Crawford will be making their first career All-Star Game appearances.

 

In his third season at the major league level, Cole currently leads the MLB in wins, posting a record of 12-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 113 strikeouts over 17 starts. The Santa Ana, Calif. native is having his best year as a pro, ranking eighth in ERA and ninth in strikeouts among all MLB pitchers. The 24-year-old Cole has helped the Pirates post a 47-34 record, putting Pittsburgh in second place in the National League Central Division.

Crawford, a five-year pro, has started 81 of 83 games this season for the Giants, hitting .265 with 12 home runs and 49 RBI. The left-handed hitter currently ranks behind only Buster Posey in home runs and RBI for San Francisco. Consistently one of the best fielding shortstops in the league, Crawford has a .978 fielding percentage and has committed just eight errors while turning 53 double-plays. The Pleasanton, Calif. native has helped the Giants post a 42-41 record, putting San Francisco in second place in the National League West Division.

The 86th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports on July 14 beginning at 4:00pm PT with first pitch scheduled for 5:15pm PT.
