Kaprielian becomes the Bruins’ 19th first round selection and fifth under Head Coach John Savage – joining Jeff Gelalich in 2012, Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer in 2011 and David Huff in 2006. The Tustin, Calif. native is the highest UCLA draftee since Cole and Bauer were taken first and third overall respectively in 2011.

“I’m so happy for James and his family,” said UCLA Head Coach John Savage. “He has worked very hard to put himself into this position and we look forward to following him on his path to the big leagues with the Yankees.”

A 2014 and 2015 All-Pac-12 honoree, Kaprielian went 10-4 with a 2.03 ERA in 17 appearances (16 starts) in 2015. Kaprielian led the conference in wins and strikeouts (114), while ranking third in ERA. The Beckman High alum finishes his three years in Westwood fifth in career ERA (2.06) and sixth in career strikeouts (275) in UCLA history.

On May 15 of this year, Kaprielian threw nine no-hit innings, striking out a season-high 11 batters, to combine with David Berg for a 10-inning no-hitter. The no-hitter is the first in UCLA history and marked the third double-digit strikeout performance of the season for the 6-4, 200-pound pitcher. For his performance, Kaprielian was awarded with his second career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award and first National Player of the Week awards from the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball.

This past summer, the second team All-American suited up for the USA Collegiate National Team and took the mound versus Chinese Taipei on July 4. In six shutout innings, Kaprielian struck out 12 batters and allowed just two baserunners total, earning him the honor of International Performance of the Year.

In 11 seasons as UCLA's Head Coach, Savage has now produced 70 MLB Draft selections, including 26 players being drafted within the first 10 rounds. Kaprielian marks the program’s 252nd all-time MLB Draft selection.

Rounds 3-10 will be tomorrow, June 9, beginning at 10:00am PT and rounds 11-40 will be Wednesday, June 10, also beginning at 10:00am PT. The final two days can be watched live on MLB.com.
