No. 16 UCLA Defeats WSU in Pac-12 Opener, 6-5

Pries and Stronach each collect two hits for the Bruins.




LOS ANGELES –Jake Pries and Jack Stronach each recorded two hits, while Michael Toglia drove in two runs as the No. 16 UCLA baseball team earned a 6-5 win over Washington State in the Pac-12 opener on Friday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.


Jake Bird (2-1) earned the win tossing 6.0 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with two strikeouts. Kyle Mora recorded his first career save throwing the final 1.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout.


The Bruins trailed 3-0 in the third inning but would put up three runs to tie the game. With runners on second and third Daniel Amaral knocked in a run with a base hit through the left side of the infield to score Jake Hirabayashi for UCLA's first run. Two batters later, Toglia would hit a line drive over the right fielder's head for a two-run double to make the score 3-3.


UCLA would then score three runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Jeremy Ydens led off the frame with a single to right field and came home on a double off the bat of Chase Strumpf to left-center field. Stronach would then hit an RBI-single to right field and Hirabayashi would lift a fly ball to left field to score Pries on a sacrifice fly.


WSU looked to make a comeback in the ninth inning as Justin Harrer hit a solo home run to center field followed by Cal Waterman grounding out to the second baseman to plate a run and cut the lead to 6-5. However, Mora was able to get Wyatt Segle to pop up to shortstop for the final out of the game.


Washington State jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second inning as Jack Smith plated Andres Alvarez from third base with a ground ball to the shortstop, followed by JJ Hancock scoring on a passed ball in the second inning.


The Cougars tacked on one more run in the third inning as Hancock hit a ball up the middle with the bases loaded to score Dillon Plew but his base hit was taken away on a diving stop by Ryan Kreidler as he was able to cut down the runner at second base.


WSU's A.J. Block (0-2) suffered the loss allowing three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings in relief, while starter Isaac Mullin went 2.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits with one strikeout.


UCLA (11-4) scored six runs on 10 hits with one error, while Washington State (4-10) finished the game with five runs on 12 hits and no errors.


The second game of this three-game Pac-12 series will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
