UCLA Baseball Signs 11 Players to NLIs

10 players are ranked inside the top 50 in the state by Perfect Game.

 

Savage J 350LOS ANGELES –UCLA Baseball has officially signed 11 players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. The 2018 class includes four pitchers, three infielders, one two-way player, one catcher, one utility player and one outfielder.

Of the 11 signees, all 11 hail from the state of California, including four players that are ranked within the top 25 players in the state of California, with 10 total players from the class ranking within the top 50 in the state, as ranked by Perfect Game USA. Overall, 10 of the 11 players earned Perfect Game USA Underclass All-American selections in 2017.

 

"This recruiting class is an impact class in all phases - on the mound, in the infield, behind the plate, and in the outfield," said UCLA head baseball coach John Savage. "We believe this class is as good as any class in the country. It is a complete class that is very athletic and we think it will add to a very good team as freshmen. Coach Ward has done a terrific job with this class.  Our entire staff has worked extremely hard on putting this group of players together to become future Bruins."

 

The Bruins recruiting class includes right-handed pitchers Jesse Bergin (Harvard-Westlake HS), Dennis Boatman (Woodcreek HS), Sean Mullen (Stockdale HS), and Nick Nastrini (Cathedral Catholic HS), right-handed pitcher and infielder Jake Moberg (Vista Murrieta HS), infielders Matt McLain (Beckman HS), Mikey Perez (Gahr HS) and JT Schwartz (Corona Del Mar HS), catcher Noah Cardenas (Bishop Alemany HS), utility Jack Filby (McClatchy HS) and outfielder Cole Roerder (Hart HS).

Head Coach John Savage: "Jesse is a big, strong right-handed pitcher with high pitch ability. He is throwing in the high-80s, touching 90 this summer with a good breaking ball. He is a guy that is tough mentally and loves to compete. Jesse can pitch with his fastball to both sides of the plate. We think he is a guy that will contribute as a freshman in our program."

He has a very competitive mind and loves to work hard and get better. He has a fastball, slider, and changeup but we think he will throw very hard down the road. With his athleticism and competitiveness, we think he will be a really good match for our program."

Noah is one of the elite catchers in the state and we think he will be someone who can impact our pitching staff along with our catching depth."

Jack is a guy that was born to hit and another competitive guy that is a utility-type defensive player so we will look at him at a couple of different positions, but we really like his ability to see the ball and to hit."

His bat really blew up this summer and became one of the better hitters in the country. Jake can play third base or shortstop and we are really excited about his versatility on both sides of the ball."

 

Sean Mullen

He is a really good athlete as he can play the infield as well but he looks to be a pitcher at UCLA. Sean looks to be a guy who can pitch as either a starter or out of the bullpen as a freshman."

We know we are getting a guy who has really improved his game as a defensive player and a player who we think could be a potential lead-off type hitter that can do multiple things in the outfield."
